Pregnancy is the time during which one or more offspring develops inside the womb of a woman. It usually occurs through sexual intercourse and through assisted reproductive technology. Pregnancy ends in a live birth. Gestation age is around 40 weeks from the start of the last menstrual period. Tender breasts, morning sickness, hunger, and frequent urination are normal symptoms of early pregnancy. Miscarriage, high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, iron deficiency, nausea, and vomiting are major complications faced by most pregnant women.

A pregnant woman needs certain nutrients like Protein, Iron, Folic acid, Iodine, and Calcium. Smart food habits help to have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. Eating a variety of vegetables, fruits, grains, fat-free dairy products, and protein foods is important during the pregnancy period. The foods and drinks must be less added sugars, saturated fats, and salt.

But the active ingredient contained in the tea called Caffeine has been associated with preterm birth and low birth weight. Tea consumption in the early pregnancy stage may affect to increase the risk of preterm birth and abnormal fetal growth.

There are three types of tea that are safe during pregnancy.

  1. Black tea
  2. White tea
  3. Green tea

Ginger tea and peppermint tea are considered safe during pregnancy. But some other herbal teas have been linked to pregnancy complications.

Effect of tea on breastfeeding

Breastfeeding mothers should need to pay attention to their diet. The things they eat and drink can be transferred to the baby through milk. Women who are breastfeeding are advised to avoid alcohol, caffeine, and certain medications. Tea has less caffeine than coffee. Green tea is the safest drink for breastfeeding mothers because of its antioxidants. There are some side effects of drinking caffeine during breastfeeding. Babies exposed to caffeine through breast milk maybe have trouble sleeping. Caffeine stays in a newborn’s system much longer than in an adult’s system.

Researchers have said, that you can drink one or three cups of green tea a day and not have any harmful effects on the newborn baby. Chocolate and soda also contain caffeine. Combining these things with tea will up overall caffeine intake.

Can drink tea during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Drinking tea while pregnant is safe. But black, green, and white tea contain caffeine. But do not drink higher amounts of tea. The recommended caffeine intake for pregnant ladies is less than 200 mg per day. The black teacup has almost 50mg and the green tea 25mg.

Even though herbal tea contains natural ingredients. The amounts of substances they contain may vary and these substances may pass on to your baby. Most herbal teas are thought to be safe for anyone to consume in reasonable amounts. But most suitable idea is to talk with your doctor before you take herbal tea.

But there are many advantages while you drinking a cup of tea. It can hydrate your body. It includes full of antioxidants that can help to boost the immunity system. Tea can reduce the risk of cancer and heart diseases.

Black tea is a good choice for resumption your day in the morning. But doctors are advised to avoid alcohol and too much caffeine.

Relationship between Black tea and pregnancy

Black tea is a beverage with many health benefits. It has an aroma, taste, and color and is rich in antioxidants. When a woman is changed into a pregnant mother, she has to change her eating habits to protect the health of her unborn baby. Black tea has an excellent oxidation capacity than other types of teas and therefore has a strong flavor. The caffeine in tea stimulates the central nervous system and cardiovascular system. L-theanine is another compound in black tea and it has the ability to relax the body and help to get rid of stress. Antioxidants contained in the black tea improve blood circulation and digestion. But pregnant women should control their tea consumption and need medical advice before drinking.

White tea is safe in small amounts during pregnancy under medical advice. White tea is made from immature tea leaves. The tea is made from buds that have not been fully opened. A cup of white tea contains 40-5- milligrams of caffeine. White tea contains a compound called EGCG and it is a polyphenol that has certain health advantages but it can inhibit folic acid intake. Folic acid is a B vitamin that prevents health defects. It enables the body to make the extra blood need to support a healthy pregnancy.

Herbal tea for pregnant mothers

Some herbal teas are safe and good for pregnancy but some are not good. Teas made from peppermint and ginger are safe for pregnancy. But drinking an excess amount of herbal tea may be harmful.

  • Peppermint tea

Peppermint tea is widely used to calm and restless tummy during pregnancy. But it is not a solution for morning sickness. Peppermint oil is a cause to reduce nausea and vomiting in the first three months of the pregnancy. Heartburn is a very common situation during the whole pregnancy period. Peppermint cause to reduces that situation further. Studies have shown peppermint tea does not harm the mother and baby. But keep in mind to avoid large amounts of herbal tea during the first trimester because it can promote menstruation.

  • Ginger tea

Ginger tea is made by using dried ginger roots in hot water. Ginger is made comfortable for morning sickness during the first trimester of pregnancy. Ginger contains a variety of compounds that may help with some of the discomforts of pregnancy. There are two compounds in ginger, gingerols, and schools. They act on receptors in the digestive system and speed stomach emptying. It helps to reduce nausea feelings.  But there are some bad effects like affecting fetal sex hormones and increasing the risk of vaginal bleeding during pregnancy. Ginger can help relieve nausea and vomiting. Drinking ginger tea is safe for expecting mothers. Gingerols are rich in raw ginger and shogalos are abundant in dried ginger. Then raw and dried ginger may contain compounds that have anti-nausea effects. Uterine pain is the most common incident faced by pregnant women during the first trimester. Ginger tea helps to relieve that pain. Morning sickness is a common incident faced by pregnant women in the first trimester of their pregnancy. Studies have proved ginger’s ability to relieve morning sickness.

Ginger tea is safe for pregnant women at least in reasonable amounts. Up to 1 gram (1000mg) of ginger per day is a safety level. Consumption of more ginger may increase the risk of preterm birth, stillbirth, low birth weight, and other complications. Keep in mind not to take more ginger tea closer to the delivery. Because the risk for bleeding may increase. Pregnant women who had previous miscarriages, vaginal bleeding, and blood clotting issues should avoid drinking ginger tea. So the most important thing is to get medical advice before using ginger tea. 

Home-made Ginger tea

Dried or fresh ginger is used to make ginger tea at home. 5 grams of sliced ginger pieces are soaked in hot water until your flavor will become. Add water to dilute the tea if it’s too strong.

  • Lemon Balm Tea

Lemon Balm tea is generally accepted as being safe for a drink by pregnant women. It is a caffeine-free beverage.

Side effects of herbal tea

Herbal teas are made from spices, fruits, or herbs therefore free of caffeine. But they may contain some unsafe compounds for pregnancy.
