Introduction to Ceylon Organic Tea

Organic products are simply known as products from organic production processes or from organic farming. We called as organic tea when its process undergo environmentally friendly and is certified by the accredited control authority.

The world’s first organic tea plantation was established in 1983 in Haldummulla, Sri Lanka, and the first organic tea export was made in 1987. Today, organic and biodynamic tea production is expanding into the cooperative and smallholder. The production and export of organic tea in Sri Lanka continues to be a production system for value-added markets.

Organic tea fields and organic cultivates areas are assured as the environmentally friendly, economically feasible, socially acceptable and certified by the international agencies who are engaged with organic tea certifications. Both large scale and small scale cultivators achieve premium prices from the international marketing by exporting Ceylon organic tea. The local demand for Ceylon organic tea is now getting increased. Most of the Sri Lankans are willing to drink organic tea because of the specific health benefits.

Organic Certification in Sri Lanka

Organic regulations are formulated based on guidelines or basic standards provided by the international Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) and Codex Alimentarius. Presently there are eight international certification agencies operating in the country, as external inspectors and certification bodies. The authorities who are having the responsibility to certify Ceylon organic tea certify the organic tea cultivated lands and estates after the three years of conservation period. There organic tea cultivators have to pay the cost for the certification of Ceylon organic tea.

NASSA, IMO, JAS, Control Union, Bio Suisse, Nature Land, OF&OG, USDA Organic, NOP and Demeter are the other major organic certifiers for Sri Lanka.

Marketing of Ceylon Organic Tea

Most of the developing countries are trying to produce and consume eco-friendly, organic products much as possible. Organic tea produced without using the synthetic agrochemicals, fertilizers and the heavy metals. So consumers are willing to drink Ceylon organic tea and it has better demand around the world.

So organic tea exporters are using several strategies to market Ceylon organic tea around the world. They are advertisements, trade shows, agents, franchisers, overseas offices, tea shops, web browsing and others. Ceylon organic tea exporters have to use more marketing strategies to aware about Ceylon organic tea around the world. Because organic tea is a new trend and most of the people do not aware about the organic tea and the health benefits of the organic tea.

Ceylon organic tea exporters are using value added products to export Ceylon organic tea. Also they use different packaging strategies as attractive packages, gift boxes and other strategies to catch up the consumers.

According to the Sri Lanka Tea Board (SLTB) there are three main company categories divided by their production. If the company produce over 1,000,000 kg it is called as large category company, production is between 500,000 kg to 1,000,000 kg it is called as medium category company and the production is less than 500,000 kg it is called as small category company.

Suggestions to Increase Export Quantity of Ceylon Organic Tea

Current decade people are willing to take healthy foods instead of using synthetic or heavy metal used products. Organic products have better demand among the consumers because it is free from synthetic chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals and others. People are willing to drink organic black tea or organic green tea instead of normal black tea or green tea.

Awareness of the new trends in the market and find out the new strategies to stable the Ceylon organic tea products in the world market will helpful to increase the demand for Ceylon organic tea.

Need to acknowledge people about the health benefits take from the organic tea and maintain good image for Ceylon organic tea and also need to increase the number of new market approaches used by the tea export firms and that will increase the number of foreign buying countries. Also produce more number of pure quality Ceylon organic tea products to increase the export volume of Ceylon organic tea.

Sri Lanka Tea Board, certification bodies and other institutes that are related to the exportation have to provide their helpful hand to the organic tea exporters to increase the export quantities and exporters should be encouraged more to get Lion Logo registration to maintain the superior quality of the tea. Because many people consider lion logo as a symbol of quality tea. So it will provide a better demand for the Ceylon organic tea.

It is very important to encourage organic tea cultivators to produce more organic tea by providing funds and the other supports and organizing of special programs and workshops among the tea cultivators and change their mind to grow organic tea without using chemicals.
